Twin props for ManipalCigna

ManipalCigna Health Insurance expects a 40 per cent growth in premium, backed by rising medical expenses and a growing distribution network. As on March 31, 2019, the company reported a net premium collection of Rs 392.51 crore, a growth of 47.48 per cent over the previous year. The standalone health insurer is optimistic of remaining on the trajectory amid an ongoing restructuring after the exit of the TTK group. Till the quarter ended September 30, 2019, the net premium collection was Rs 236.19 crore against Rs 179.44 crore in the corresponding year-ago period.

“There will be a healthy growth in the overall business as there is a huge untapped potential in the market. We are expecting premium collection to increase over 40 per cent compared with the last financial year. Also, we will continue to grow at a faster pace than industry standards,” said Prasun Sikdar, managing director and CEO of ManipalCigna Health Insurance. “There is also a significant increase in awareness towards the growing cost of medical expenses, which is pushing people to buy health insurance. The medical inflation cost is higher than 15 per cent and to fight this rate, health insurance companies have come up with a wide range of health products that provide various covers, depending on the customer’s requirement.

This is providing impetus to the sector's growth,” he added. The insurer is also in favour of standardisation of the rack rates of certain medical procedures with the General Insurance Council looking into the subject. “There is a steep rise in medical inflation and it is important to have standard rack rates for certain procedures without impacting the quality of treatment. The fixed rate will bring relief to the customers. Some of the common surgical procedures that will come under this will be cataract, hernia etc,” said Sikdar. The company is also strengthening its distribution network to increase business. “Our branch network has increased from 11 to 40 in last one year, and we aim to expand it to 97 by 2021,” said Sikdar.
