Mental health refers to the behavioural and emotional well-being of a person. It is not just the absence of mental illnesses; instead, it is the ability to cope with different situations, promote personal happiness and build relationships.

Importance of Mental Health

Good emotional and mental health plays a vital role in the way you think and the way you behave. Mental well-being can boost productivity, help in maintaining healthy relationships and enable us to make sensible choices in case of an adversity. At every stage in our lives, mental health is essential, and we must do everything to keep it healthy.

Effective Ways That Help to Stay Mentally Healthy

#1 Eat Healthy, Stay Healthy

Eating well and following a balanced diet is not only meant for providing the body with essential nutrients; it is important for mental well-being too. A good balance between eating healthy and exercising can lift your mood and release endorphins to make you happy.

#2 Sleep

Lack of sleep = poor mental health. Many reasons push you to stay up at night and cause a lack of sleep. Research and studies show that an average of 7-8 hours of sleep is ideal for an individual. An adequate amount of sleep is vital for managing our moods and emotions. Preferably, don’t look at your phone half an hour before going to bed and half an hour after waking up in the morning.

#3 Dealing with Stress & Anxiety

Stress and anxiety can take a significant toll on your mental health and have you spiralling downwards into a negative hole. Try to plan your day and write down all the things you must achieve during the day and another list for the week. The idea is not to feel overwhelmed rather, tackle each situation one-by-one and feel a sense of accomplishment when you succeed. Practising yoga is a great way to deal with anxiety and help you focus.

#4 Do What You Love

Sounds easy and doable but truth be told, it is something we struggle with the most. Our daily lives comprising of domestic chores, office work and commitments can take up all our time and leave us with no time to spare for indulging in activities that we love. To stay mentally happy, you need to make that time every day or each week to do what you love. It can be reading, painting, watching a good show or movie, learning a new language, cooking, etc.

#5 Socialize

Socializing and interacting with people is another important aspect to staying mentally healthy. Building connections and having friends helps in building your self-esteem as well as having the trust and comfort to share your feelings when you are feeling low. Just talking to someone for 10 minutes can help in taking that invisible weight off your shoulders, make you feel better and promote emotional well-being.

While these may be some methods to promote mental and emotional well-being, it is also important to reach out to people. Talking about what you are going through can lead you to seek the right treatment as well as help someone else going through depression.
